Book Report Time: Quilts Japan Issue #146

I have a subscription to both Quilts Japan and Patchwork Quilt Tsushin.  Both of these are the two most popular quilting magazines in Japan.

Each issue has many gems in there and patterns galore.  My favorite part is usually the fold out paper that has tons of applique designs on it.

Kinokuniya will ship to addresses in the U.S. for subscriptions of these.  Not sure about other countries.

Issue #146 of Quilts Japan does not disappoint:

  • Pages of Hawaiian Applique
  • Adorable 3D stuffed fruits on p45
  • Incredible vine and leaf applique on p52
  • An advertisement on p66 for a book in English called Flowers Hearts & Garlands.  Why do I need to read a Japanese magazine to find out about a book this awesome?  Sigh, I need to get out more.
  • Beautiful house quilt on p104 with a very interesting block setting
If you love hand work like I do, this issue is certainly for you.  If you really don't like Hawaiian applique, you may want to skip it, as there is quite a lot of it in here.

Marisa, I have long been an admirer of these Japanese magazines. However subscriptions are very expensive in comparison with other mags so I always resist at the last minute (and regret it, actually!) I confine myself to a little spluge each time I go to a big quilt show, they are usually for sale there, often back-issues.

Hmmm, not too enamoured with Hawaian quilts, though I do acknowledge their intricacy, so won't be signing up for this issue, but you have put that annoying little thought in my mind again.....oh dear!

I'll have to check it out tomorrow when I pass the book store. Yes, they do have good patterns and the pictures are good enough you don't have to be able to read Japanese.

Marisa, Thanks so much for sharing a review of the May issue of the magazine. Those two magazines are my favorite quilting magazines. I just looked for them on ebay and used the good old "Buy It Now". So, they should be here next week. I can't hardly wait. I especially love Hawaiian quilts, and judging my some of the pictures I saw on ebay, I believe some of the quilts were designed by Kathy Nakajima. She is one of my favorite Japanese quilt designers. So again, thank you so much for mentioning the magazines and thereby jogging my memory to look for / buy them. I would have hated to miss out. Best regards and Happy Stitching!
